From 1993–2011, Mr. Martin was a senior executive with Thomson Reuters (NYSE: TRI),
a $12.2 billion global provider of information, software and services
to the legal, tax, scientific, intellectual property and financial
services industries, and a member of the company's executive committee. From 2005-2011, he was based in NYC and
was president & CEO of the company’s Tax & Accounting business,
a $1.1 billion global company with 5,500 employees in 10 countries
worldwide providing software, services and information products to
tax professionals in multi-national corporations and accounting firms. During
his tenure, he was credited with and led the company’s explosive growth in revenue from
$480 million in 2004 to $1.1 billion in 2011, leading to the
company’s #1 global and US market leadership position. Under his leadership, the
company completed 34 acquisitions for ~$900
million, and produced multiple years of double-digit organic growth.
From 2001–2004, Mr. Martin was president & CEO of TRI's Dialog Corporation and from 1998–2000, Mr. Martin served as executive vice president & chief strategy officer for TRI's $3.2 billion Legal & Regulatory Group,
where he was responsible for guiding the company’s aggressive expansion in the US and
internationally. He was also general manager
of the company’s $75 million Latin American business during this time. Between 1993 and 1997, Mr.
Martin served in a number of senior executive and general management roles for TRI in its legal and regulatory group under the Westlaw, West Publishing and Lawyers Cooperative Publishing brands, including chief operating officer of Thomson Legal Publishing
(revenues of $420 million). He was credited with the global expansion of
Westlaw, now the world’s leading online research product for lawyers.
Mr. Martin began his career in the US computer industry with Lanier Business Products (NYSE: LBS) and later with Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) and Syntrex Networks (NASDAQ: STRX),
rising rapidly through a dozen promotions and leadership roles during a 10
year period. He was later president of two
public software companies, Sulcus Software (NASDAQ: SULC) and CompuTrac Legal Software (AMEX: LLB).
Mr. Martin graduated with a BA from Virginia Tech, and holds a MBA from Emory University. Originally from Richmond, VA, he now resides with his wife in Minneapolis, MN, where he has served on the board of directors of the American Heart Association (AHA) of Minneapolis (and formerly, the AHA board of New York City) and is actively involved with the venture capital community.
