Roy M. Martin, Jr. is an accomplished investor with extensive experience in corporate P&L management, go-to-market strategy formulation, professional investing, and in M&A.  Highlights 2011 – Present: As an investor and former executive chairman of Xenex Healthcare Services (www.xenex.com), he helped a provider of revolutionary disinfection systems for hospitals become the global segment leader; as an investor (co-investing with venture capital firm Cue Ball Capital) and board member of Lex Machina (www.lexmachina.com), he helped this analytics business focused on patent analysis for intellectual property lawyers become a segment leader (sold to Lexis Nexis); as an investor and board member of Pramata (www.pramata.com), he helped a legal contracts management (CLM) SaaS workflow software provider to establish a market segment and leadership; as an investor in (co-investing with private equity firm Veritas Capital) and  a senior executive for Truven Health Analytics (www.merative.com), a healthcare IT business providing analytic

products to providers, payers and governmental agencies, he helped establish Truven as an early leader in AI-driven healthcare solutions (renamed as Watson Health after sold to IBM for $2.6 billion); as an investor and executive chairman of the board of Pursuit Vascular (www.pursuitvascular.com), he helped lead a medical device company specializing in innovative catheter products for chronic dialysis patients to global market leadership (sold to ICU Medical); as the first seed investor in HubSync (www.hubsync.com) a leader in providing AI-driven workflow management software for large accounting firms, he helped the company create a leading position in a new market segment (sold to Thoma Bravo); as a current investor in and board member of Aibidia (www.aibidia.com) a global SaaS business based in Helsinki, Finland, he is actively helping the company automate global transfer pricing compliance and strategy for MNC tax departments around the world; and he is a long-time senior advisor to StarTec Investments, LLC (www.startecinv.com), a venture capital firm based in Minneapolis, MN.

Prior to WELM Ventures:  Mr. Martin was a senior executive with Thomson Reuters (NYSE: TRI), then a US $12.2 billion global provider of information, software and services to the legal, tax, scientific, healthcare, intellectual property, and financial services industries, until 2011, and a member of the company's Executive Committee.

  • President & CEO of the company’s Tax & Accounting business (TRTA), a global company with 5,500 employees in 10 countries worldwide providing software, services and information products to tax professionals in multi-national corporations, governments and accounting firms. He led the company’s explosive growth in revenue from US $480 million in 2004 to $1.3 billion in 2011, as the company became the #1 global and US market leader.  While CEO, the company completed almost 40 acquisitions valued at ~US $1 billion, and produced multiple years of double-digit organic growth.
  • President & CEO of TRI's Dialog Corporation, where he executed a successful turnaround out of bankruptcy following the company’s acquisition by TRI.
  • Executive vice president & chief strategy officer for TRI's US $3.2 billion Legal & Regulatory Group (TLRG) where he was responsible for developing and then executing the group’s aggressive global expansion and acquisition strategies.
  • Managing director of TLRG’s US S$75 million Latin American business.
  • Multiple senior executive and general management roles as part of the WestlawWest Publishing and Lawyers Cooperative Publishing brands, including the chief operating officer of Thomson Legal Publishing (revenues of US $420 million).

Mr. Martin began his career in the US computer industry with various roles in sales, sales management and general management. He rose rapidly before becoming president of two different public software businesses, Sulcus Software (NASDAQ: SULC) and CompuTrac Legal Software (AMEX: LLB).

He graduated with a BA from Virginia Tech, and holds an MBA from Emory University. Originally from Richmond, VA, he now offices with his wife in Naples, FL.  He is a donor to various charities, and has served on the board of directors of the American Heart Association (AHA) in both Minneapolis and New York City.  He is actively involved with the venture capital community.
